Maharana Pratap, the eldest of 25 siblings, served as the 13th king of Mewar, now a part of Rajasthan. His life was marked by hardships as he faced several wars at an early stage of life. His determination to protect the freedom of his kingdom and his people led him to fight the Mughals bravely.
The Battle of Haldighati holds great importance in his important battles against the Mughals. Despite facing eventual defeat in this battle, Maharana Pratap never gave up his fight for the freedom of his people.

According to the old Julian calendar, Maharana Pratap’s birth anniversary is celebrated on 9 May 1540. However, the Gregorian calendar has replaced the Julian calendar. Using the proleptic Gregorian calendar, Maharana Pratap’s date of birth is recalculated to May 19, 1540.
Nevertheless, the celebration of Maharana Pratap’s birth anniversary is celebrated according to the Hindu calendar. According to the Hindu calendar, Maharana Pratap was born in Tritiya, Jyestha, Shukla Paksha, 1597 in Vikram Samvat. This date falls either in late May or early June on the Western calendar.
Maharana Pratap Jayanti 2023: History
Maharana Pratap, who was born on May 9, 1540, belonged to the state of Rajasthan. His father was Maharana Udai Singh II, who was the king of the Mewar Kingdom. Being the eldest of his 25 siblings, Pratap assumed the title of Crown Prince. After the demise of his father, he assumed the throne of Mewar.
Maharana Pratap, a Hindu Rajput king belonging to the Sisodia clan of Rajputs, is highly respected and worshiped by many royal families in Rajasthan because of his extraordinary valor and fearlessness.
Considered a true patriot, he is famous for instigating the first war of independence in the country. During the Battle of Haldighati, he fought alongside Akbar, one of the most illustrious Mughal emperors.
Although Maharana Pratap was eventually forced to retreat, he inflicted heavy losses on his opponents, earning immense respect and admiration for his valor.
Consequently, his birth anniversary is celebrated every year as Maharana Pratap Jayanti on the third day of Jyestha Shukla Charan, the third month of the Hindu calendar.
In January 1597, he suffered serious injuries during a hunting accident, eventually dying at the age of 56 on 29 January of that year.
