Assam: A special NIA court in Assam has convicted a man for conspiring in the bomb blasts, among other cases. The accused has been sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment by the court in a 2018 conspiracy case related to formation of Hizbul Mujahideen module.
An NIA agency spokesperson said the special court in Guwahati also imposed a fine on Mohd Saidul Alam, a resident of Hojai area in Assam. Five people were chargesheeted by the NIA on March 11, 2019, in the case after the agency took over the investigation from Jamnamukh police station in Hojai district on October 5, 2018. The NIA court had on December 23 last year convicted two accused, Shehnawaz Alom and Umar Farooq.
NIA investigation has revealed that the three convicted accused had entered into a conspiracy with one Kamruz Zaman to set up Hizbul Mujahideen module in Assam. During 2017-2018, he had organized a series of meetings in different mosques like Milanpur Masjid, Islampur Masjid and Solmari in Jamunamukh area.
The spokesperson said the meetings were used to spread the hardline fundamentalist ideology of the banned organization with speeches about alleged atrocities and jihad. The youth attending these meetings were told about the need to raise a module of Hizbul Mujahideen to carry out terrorist acts in response to the alleged atrocities.
The officer said Zaman, Alom and Farooq had hatched the conspiracy to raise funds for the purchase of arms and ammunition. The investigation also revealed that Alam, along with Zaman, Alom and Farooq, hatched a conspiracy to carry out bomb blasts and armed attacks on innocent civilians in non-Muslim areas of Lumding and Hojai on the eve of Dussehra, the official said. The spokesman said they also planned to buy arms and ammunition for these attacks.
