Berhampur: A case was registered on Thursday against a woman sub-inspector (SI) of Mohana police station in Gajapati district for abducting an elderly person. The accused, SI Jyotsna Ray, allegedly abducted the 69-year-old victim Prerna Manjhi of Nudruj village from Paralakhemundi court with the help of her accomplices.
Sources said last month the Mohana police had seized an auto-rickshaw for allegedly transporting ganja illegally. To release the three-wheeler, Manjhi approached SI Ray, who allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000. Though Majhi paid the amount, the auto-rickshaw was not released.
On 12 April Manjhi asked Ray to return his money. When he did not pay any heed, she reported the matter to Mohana IIC A Nishika. On the instructions of the IIC, Ray returned the money to Manjhi.
Two days later, the SI was transferred to the district headquarters Paralakhemundi by Gajapati SP Swati Kumar. Similarly, in place of A Nishika, Basant Sethi has been made IIC of Mohana police station.
On Thursday, Manjhi had gone to the Paralakhemundi court to drop off an autorickshaw, where she met Ray. The SI allegedly abducted him with the help of his three accomplices and released him after taking his signature on a blank paper. After his release, Manjhi went to the Mohana police station and filed a complaint against Ray.
Manjhi said in his FIR that he was forcibly taken to the nearby Kirma forest and detained there for several hours. The SI allegedly asked him to write a note stating that the demand for bribe was false.
On Manjhi’s refusal, Ray forcibly obtained his signature on a blank sheet of paper. When contacted Mohana IIC Basant Sethi said that on the basis of Manjhi’s complaint a case has been registered and investigation is underway.
